People tend to turn up to religious scholars in the days leading up to Ramadan, join study groups, listen to lectures and sermons in a bid to get an answer to this question. With all the knowledge in grasp, it is the practical implementation phase where most of us falter. Personal and spiritual growth is what everyone craves and seeks in this month. And of course there is no better time than the month of Ramadan to maximize one’s potential, get rid of old undesirable habits, adopt a spiritually healthy way of living and make resolute commitment with oneself to sustain this salubrious lifestyle in the coming year ahead. In this post, we intend to share with you some simple suggestions that can help you transform this Ramadan into a real turning point in your life.

1 – Decide What You Want to Achieve

First things first! Make a purposeful intention to make this Holy month a game changer, a watershed in your life and stick by it with all your heart and soul. A sincere and earnest desire is required in this regard. Wondering how to do it? The answer is quite simple. You need to formulate a plan of action underscoring specific objectives for this month. These objectives could be recitation of a certain number of pages of the Holy Quran with its meaning after each Salah, financial support of the needy in the locality through the formation of a welfare group, pray taraweeh prayers regularly throughout Ramadan etc. While chalking out the plan of action and choosing the objectives, make sure that you stay realistic, pragmatic and specific. Try and assess your past year, your weaknesses, strengths and potentials and do not get carried away with emotion or even complacency.

2 – Stay Focused

With your plan of action containing clear, articulate objectives ready, it’s now time to figure out how on daily basis you can practically implement it. The simplest way to do this is to divide your entire day into things to do with strict timelines. Make up an elaborate schedule for a day and allocate time slots to various activities that would lead to the achievement of your objectives. Such a timetable would help you avoid all the distractions that could serve as obstacles. These distractions could be in the shape of television, social media and even lethargy. So, when we are in the middle of the recitation of the Holy Quran and we know that as dictated by our timetable, we have allotted time for checking our emails later in the evening, we should automatically get the resolve to maintain our focus on the Holy Quran while forgetting about the email notifications. Well, of course it all boils down to determination and relentlessness!

3 – Start Living for Others

Dedicate yourself to living for those who are needy and destitute. You can do so by giving alms to the poor and the needy or spending your time in worthy causes for the welfare of mankind. You can visit the elderly and the sick in hospitals or nursing homes or even provide food for people to break their fast with. We all know that giving charity is way to purify your wealth and it will always be a great experience to spend lives in a state of greater purity. The Prophet (PBUH) also said: “Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” (Al-Tirmidhi)

4 – Recite Holy Quran with its Meaning

Decide whether you want to recite half a Juz or an entire Juz daily or as much as you can manage and then build on it from there onwards. During this prestigious month, we need to ensure that we spend our maximum time in reciting the Holy Quran and remembering our Mighty Creator (SWT). Allah (SWT) says in the Holy Quran, “The month of Ramadan (is that) in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.” (Al-Quran 2:185) We should also try and make an effort to read the Holy Quran with its meaning so that we are able to understand what we are reading. Moreover, we should also not forget to spare some time for reflecting on what we have read in the Holy Quran so that we are able to get a clearer and better understanding of our faith, our responsibilities and duties as Muslims.

5 – Engage Yourself in Dhikr

Keep yourselves engaged in dhikr so that your connection with Allah (SWT) never breaks even when you are busy in your worldly pursuits. Make an earnest effort to complete your adhkar for both morning and evening, increase salawat upon Holy Prophet (PBUH) while constantly busying yourself in istighfar. We should keep reminding ourselves of the blessings associated with worship in Ramadan. This should serve as an incentive for us to dedicate a large majority of our time in acts of ibadah.

We sincerely wish that you are able to plan each and every day of Ramadan effectively and that you are able gather as much barakah from this Holy month as possible. May this Ramadan be a real turning point in your lives! Amen!
